Hyperthermia Management in Field Environments

Hyperthermia is a condition in which the body temperature rises to dangerously high levels. It is most common in hot environments and during periods of high physical activity. Military, law enforcement, and first responders often train and operate in field environments without access to air conditioning or running water. This can make it difficult to cool down a hyperthermic victim, who requires immediate cooling.

In the past, organizations in these fields have transported large coolers filled with ice and bed sheets to the field. The ice and bed sheets are used to cool down hyperthermic victims. However, these coolers are heavy and difficult to carry, and the bed sheets must be washed and dried after each use.

Today, there is a more effective and convenient option available: pre-packaged cooling blankets. These blankets are often called Polar Skin Ice Sheets or Polar Skin cooling blankets. They are lightweight and easy to carry, and they can be used to cool down hyperthermic victims quickly and easily.

The U.S. Military and USG can acquire these blankets using the National Stock Number (NSN) 6532016536054.

Polar Skin Ice Sheets are made of a special material that absorbs a fluid and then releases it slowly. This creates a cooling effect that can help to lower the body temperature of a hyperthermic victim. The blanket uses three different methods of cooling:

  • Convection: As the fluid on the blanket evaporates, it takes heat away from the body.

  • Conduction: The blanket conducts heat away from the body through direct contact.

  • Evaporation: The fluid on the blanket evaporates, taking heat away from the body.

Polar Skin Ice Sheets have been studied and proven effective in cooling down hyperthermic victims. In one study, the use of Polar Skin Ice Sheets was shown to lower the body temperature of hyperthermic victims by an average of 2 degrees Fahrenheit within 10 minutes.

If you are an organization that operates in hot environments, Polar Skin Ice Sheets are a valuable tool that can help you keep your personnel safe. They are lightweight, easy to use, and effective in cooling down hyperthermic victims.

Here are some of the benefits of using Polar Skin Ice Sheets:

  • Lightweight and easy to carry

  • Non-toxic and hypoallergenic

  • Can be used to cool down hyperthermic victims quickly and easily

  • Proven effective in clinical studies
