POLAR SKIN™ Comprehensive Cooling System: A Valuable Tool for Preventing and Treating Hyperthermia

Heat-related illnesses are a serious problem for military personnel, who are often exposed to hot and humid environments. These illnesses can range from mild heat cramps to life-threatening heat stroke.

The POLAR SKIN™ Comprehensive Cooling System is a valuable tool for preventing and treating heat-related illnesses. The system is easy to use and can be used to cool individuals experiencing hyperthermia as a result of exercise.

The system consists of six ice sheets (NSN: 6532016536054) and one ice pack bundle (four cooling pads). The ice sheets are placed on the individual's chest, and the ice packs are placed under the arm pits and the groin.

The system is effective in reducing core temperature. In a study published the system was shown to reduce core temperature by 1.0±0.2°C in 20 minutes. This rate of cooling is slightly better than a similar study that used cold-water immersion.

The system is also safe and easy to use. The ice sheets and ice pack bundle are made of a soft, breathable material developed specifically for thermal heat transfer.

Here are some additional tips for preventing and treating heat-related illnesses:

  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids, even if you are not thirsty.

  • Avoid strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day.

  • Wear loose-fitting, light-colored clothing.

  • Take frequent breaks in the shade or in an air-conditioned environment.

  • Monitor yourself and your fellow soldiers for signs of heat-related illness, such as fatigue, headache, dizziness, nausea, and vomiting. If you or someone you know experiences any of these symptoms, seek medical attention immediately.
